151 STATE STREET.
To Our f'utran?: Chicago, January
1st, 1888.
With many thanks for past favors, we take pleasure in handing you herewith our Thirty-second
Annual Illustrated Catalogue and Price List, for 1888, an index of contents for which will be found on page 200;
would also respectfully refer you to page 201, for suggestions in regard to ordering goods. Discounts, &c., &c.
During the present year we have made many important additions, thereby increasing our facilities in all
Departments, and if kindly favored with a share of your trade, will pledge ourselves that the most untiring
diligence and care will be exercised in filling all your orders.
The Engravings in this (catalogue are correct and accurate illustrations of the goods which they represent and
are all drawn to the actual size, with the exception of some of the Chains and larger pieces of Silver Ware, Clocks
and Mantel Ornaments, where the dimensions are given with the description. The (’hains, however, all show a
section of the full size, and, in a few instances, show the entire length also, but where the dimensions are not given
the articles quoted are the exact size of the illustrations.
Having studied carefully to call everything by its proper name and avoid all exaggerations, we can safely
say that all articles listed in this book will look even better than the illustrations, so that our Customers at a
distance can order as intelligently and with the same confidence from this Catalogue as though they were making
their selections in person from our Safes and Show Cases.
The late improvements in the art of Engraving render it possible to show a perfect fac-simile of any article,
even to the most minute detail, and this has enabled us to entirely dispense with and discontinue the old practice
or custom of sending out goods on approval or selection, but if any article ordered from this Catalogue, which is
not engraved or made specially to order, should, upon examination, fall short of the expectations of the purchaser,
or fail to come fully up to all requirements, it can be returned at our expense and the purchase money wall be
cheerfully refunded.
On the next page will be found a brief description of the most popular precious stones in use at the present
day, with their chemical composition and a few of their leading characteristics, which we trust may be found
interesting as well as useful to our patrons.
We Warrant all Watches regularly for 2 years^ during which time we perform free of charge all repairs,
cleaning, &c., tliat may become necessary in the course of ordinary wear, and if, after the expiration of this time.
Watches are sent to us to be cleaned regularly once a year, for which our charge would be $1.50, we give an
additional Warrant of from 5 to 10 years, according to the grade of movements as follows, viz.: 5 years on all 7
and 9 jeweled movements, 7 years on all 11 and 13 jeweled movements and 10 years on all 15,17 and 19 jeweled
movements. From this it will be seen that on a B. W. Raymond movement the expense would be nothing for the
first two years and for the next ten years could not exceed $1.50 per year. Extraordinary repairs, however, such
as would result from n fall or other accident to the Watch, are not included in this guarantee.
We manufacture ourselves everjlhing in the line of Solid Gold Goods, but do not make an^hing in Rolled

excepting the question of durability, are fully equal in other respects to solid gold.
We do not keep in stock or handle any of the cheaper grades of Watches, Jewelry or Silver Ware, etc., of
any description, fully believing in the old saying (which is a true one), that the best is always the cheapest in tiie
end, and our prices will always be found as low as consistent with first-class material and workmanship.
In the present work we would ask your special attention to a few of our great specialties, viz.: Watches and
Diamonds, our stock of which, especially in Watches, is much more complete and varied in assortment than ever
before, thereby affording the opportunity of selecting a choice jewel or a time-piece of real merit at a moderate
price.
Would also ask your attention to our fine and extensive assortment of Solid Gold and Stone Rings, all of
our own make, and our Plain Eighteen-Carat Rings: the latter are also our own make, and each Ring bearing our

manufacture any Plain Gold Rings of a lower grade than Eighteen-Carat Fine.

the quality is always guaranteed. We make No Charge for Engraving Name, Initials, etc., on any article com¬
ing under this class, which includes Spoons, Forks, etc., etc.

most difficult and complicated work at the most reasonable rates. When Watches are sent to us to be put in
f)rder, we furnish estimate of cost of repairs needed, by return mail, if desired, and await final orders before
putting any expense on them. All work warranted for two years.
