KNIGHTS TEMPLAR
TROPHY
TIE troply shora on tois page was ade
for the Grand Comnandery, Knights
Templars of the United States. The cup
was awarded the best-drilled company in the
United States at the Triennial Conclave of the
Kuights in Los Angeles. It weighs 161 onnees
and is a most artistie piece of work.
The eup stands 27 inches high, and with a
base of 6 inehes attains a height of 33 inches.
The pedestal is engraved with three shields,
alternating with three swords entwined with
laurels and holding at their points erowns of
thorns, emblematical of atonement and peni-
tenee. Jnst ahove the pedestal are three
Corinthian columns, gently sloping inward so
that the whole eup gains a sense of architee-
tural strength and constructive beauty. The
Trinity of threes prevails in all the symbols.
In the panels between are crossed swords and
the words: Justice, Fortitnde and Merey.
Above the three words denoting the quality of
the swords are the three words, the bulwark
of the order: Wisdom, Strength and Beauty.
The Corinthian columns and the panels be-
tween form the central part of the eup.
The eight-pointed cross of the Templars,
with the motto "In Hoe Signo Vinces," is in-
serted in three panels above the Corinthian
coltmns, and around the cup at the top is the
mnotto engraven in larger letters. The twelve
apostles' shields, engraved around the eover,
are surrounded with graceful seroll work, and
the whole is surmounted by a f-ineh solid sil-
ver Knight Templar in full armor. A peeu-
liarly delicate faet in regard to the designing
of the Templar is indieated by the position of
his sword and shield. The shield is standing
girded to his wrist and in front of him. One
edge tonehes the armored coat and the other
the sword held in the right hand, and standing
upright in front. By this means the eup and
cover ean be handled frequently, without the
hand meeting any sharp edges or eansing any
destruetion of the cup.
The main feature is undoubtedly the sup-
porting three colums in the central part,
standing 18 inehes bigh. The eup, massive as
it is, possesses a harmony of parts and arehi-
teetural strength suffieient to permit its con-
struction in stone instead of silver, and its
position on a mount as a monument instead of
in a conelave hall as a parehment bolder. The
cover, when taken off, discloses the hollow in-
terior of the cup, 18 inches deep, into which
the charter or other valnable doenment of the
commandery winning it could he plaeed. KNIGHTS TEMPLAR TROPHY
